VIVIAN IP
Hong Kong native Vivian Ip is an active orchestral and choral conductor, who has worked and performed in Hong Kong, the USA and Europe. Currently Music Director of Xing-er Symphony Orchestra, she led the orchestra to win the Gold Award at the 6th World Orchestra Festival in Vienna in 2018, where she also received the Talented Conductor Prize. She was the Winner of Special Prize in the 6th International Competition for Young Choral Conductors in 2011.
In the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 seasons, Ip was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, where she conducted subscription concerts, community concerts, and assisted its Music Director Jaap van Zweden and guest conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Charles Dutoit, Vassily Sinaisky and Lawrence Foster. She has been further invited as guest conductor for HKPhil, as well as for Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Musica Viva Hong Kong and Gustav Mahler Orchestra. Her international appearances include concerts with the Polish Baltic Philharmonic, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Kammerorchester Musica Vitae (Sweden), and Pro Arte Orchestra Vienna. As a choral conductor, she has been the Music Director of Chorus Delicti Wien for 7 years. In July 2019, she was invited to conduct the Asia Pacific Youth Choir which consists of 40 selected-singers from different Asian Pacific countries. She has also worked with the Berlin Radio Choir, DR Vokalensemblet (Denmark), Wienersingverein, World Youth Choir, Hong Kong Oratorio Society, Hong Kong Children’s Choir, Indiana University Symphonic Choir, Indiana University Children’s Choir, among others.
Ip received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (First Honour). With an Associate Instructorship and the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship for Overseas Studies, she received her Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting at the Indiana University Bloomington. She received her Mag. Art. degree (passed with distinction) in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in the class of Johannes Wildner and Uroš Lajovic. She actively participated in masterclasses by maestri Fabio Luisi, Simone Young, Bertrand de Billy and Helmuth Rilling.
Ip is also a devoted educator. She teaches conducting in the BA and MA Programme of the Music Department, Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has given seminars and workshops for the Rimavská Sobota Choral Festival, Slovakia, Education University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Music Office, Hong Kong Inter-School Choral Festival, among others. She has also been invited as an adjudicator for numerous competitions.
