LAMENTATIONS
Mar 25 (Sun) 2018 | 6pm | St. Stephen’s Chapel
Following two successful projects earlier this year with contemporary dancer Christine He and the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Tallis Vocalis return with their first standalone production of 2018, ‘Lamentations’, a special Holy Week concert by candlelight.
Holy Week – beginning on Palm Sunday and ending on Holy Saturday – has inspired composers over the centuries to produce some of their finest and most moving music, with solemn themes of sorrow, angst, hope and redemption. Tallis Vocalis have compiled a programme of twelve outstanding pieces by Renaissance composers from England and continental Europe, including two settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah by Thomas Tallis and Tomás Luis de Victoria, and concluding with Alonso Lobo’s majestic six-part funeral motet Versa est in luctum.
In the intimate setting of St. Stephen’s Chapel, these works, interspersed with moments of chant, will create an evening of beauty, stillness, and contemplation.
