GESUALDO’S TENEBRAE RESPONSORIES

Gesualdo wrote nine settings for the responsories for each of the three solemn days of the Holy Week. The set for Holy Saturday contains some of his most passionate and eccentric music, with its unexpected chromatic shifts and sudden leaps and breaks in melodic lines.

The programme is complemented with Alonso Lobo’s magnificent Versa est in luctum, and a new commissioned piece by our Associate Composer, Vanissa Law, which will be a reflection on Lobo’s masterpiece.
